River Deveron

Salmon, Sea & Brown Trout Fishing

Overview & History

The river Deveron is approximately 55 miles long and rises in the Cabrach Hills between Glass, Dufftown and Rhynie. It is part of the Deveron, Isla and Bogie Trust and as such we adhere to their rules. Over the years the river has been renowned as a Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout river. The season for Salmon and Sea Trout is from 11th February to 31st October, while the Brown Trout season is 14th March to 6th October. To this day the Deveron still holds the UK record for a Salmon caught on a fly by Mrs 'Tiny' Morison back in 1924.

Our two beats on the River Deveron are: Eden, which was purchased in 1970, extended in 2004 and accommodates 6 rods and Lower Inverichnie which was added in 1996 and accommodates 3 rods. Our River Deveron beats have been maintained and run to the highest of standards and are a family affair with the third generation now actively involved.

George Anderson our ghillie is now retiring and we wish him all the best. We are very pleased to welcome Andy Morrison as our new ghillie from the start of the 2024 season.

River Deveron Eden Beat

River Deveron Salmon Fishing

The Eden beat lies some 3 miles from Banff and only 9.5 miles from Turriff and is made up of 9 pools: King Edward, Carding Pot, Auchenbadie, Thieves Pot, Willows, Rodger, Croys, Piles and Brooms, stretching over roughly 1 mile of double bank fishing and 0.2 miles of single bank fishing. It is only 4.3 miles to the mouth of the river and so benefits from fish coming off the tide. Eden tends to fish better in higher water and has excellent retaining pools.

The fishing is extremely user friendly with easy access to the water and safe wading. The banks are all maintained and mown throughout the season making enjoyable walking from pool to pool. There is a boat provided to cross the river making it easy to fish off both banks and to access all the pools. It is also possible to wade across at two or three locations. There are benches scattered along the Deveron banks allowing for ease of changing a fly and all pools are accessible by car subject to ground conditions.

The main lodge (see below) is based about halfway along the beat, offering commanding views up and down the river. This beat and Lower Inverichnie rent very well together.

River Deveron Lower Inverichnie Beat

Lower Inverichnie is the lower half of the Inverichnie beat (which is the next River Deveron beat downstream from Eden) running from Upper Inverichnie and down to Montcoffer. It is a double banked stretch of river running approx. 365 metres and is single banked for an additional 90 metres. It is made up of three pools: The Avenue, The Grey Mare and The Grey Mares Tail. This stretch of river Deveron is better known for fishing in lower water.

Again, the fishing is extremely accessible with easy wading. The banks are all maintained and mown throughout the season making enjoyable walking from pool to pool and, again, benches are strategically placed.

Lower Inverichnie has a comfortable fishing hut on its banks, ideal for making a cup of tea or coffee. This beat and Eden rent very well together.

The fishing is let by the week through the season – with arrival and departure on the day of rest – but day fishing tickets are also available in the early part of the season on both beats, giving a great days sport on Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout'.

Eden Lodge

River Deveron Eden Lodge

As mentioned above the Lodge is based halfway down the Eden beat and is rented with the Eden beat. It is one of the finest lodges on the river Deveron with facilities including a fully equipped kitchen, large rod room with heaters, large chest freezer and two fridges, wood burning stove, comfortable seating, indoor and outdoor dining, TV and Broadband Internet and a huge terrace with barbeque.

Built recently the Lodge is set high up a hillside with parking below, both out of the reaches of flood water. The views are spectacular because of this height, with southeast facing views up the Auchenbadie to King Edward and down the Rodger to the Croys allowing anyone sitting on the terrace to see most of the action on the beat from the comfort of their chair with a glass of the local Deveron to hand!
